The ancient Egyptians had a very healthy diet. Their main food was bread, made from the abundant wheat grown along the Nile. They also ate a lot of fresh vegetables. Onions were a favorite, though we don't really know if they ate the bulbs or scallions.
Fish were plentiful in the Nile and often eaten, though priests were not supposed to eat them because they were considered unclean.
Meat was also eaten, especially wild duck, geese, and birds. Beef was an expensive delicacy.
Many of the animals common to us, such as chickens, turkey, and lamb, were unknown. |
