Amenophis III

Ask Amenophis:

What did the Egyptians use instead of pillows?
What did the Egyptians write with?
When did Pharaohs wear a blue crown?
The prehistoric (pre-writing) period in Egypt is broken into two parts. The earlier one is called the Badarian period and only a few examples of it have survived. It seems to have lasted from about 5000 to 4000 BC.

The later phase is called the Naqada period and is much better known because thousands of Naqada graves have been discovered. The Naqada period lasted from about 4000 to 3000 BC.

The Naqada people are clearly Egyptian in culture. Society was stratified into upper and lower classes, although we don't know if there yet was a Pharaoh. Hierokonpolis seems to have been the most important city, judging from the quantity and quality of the grave goods.

The Naqada people did not mummify their dead, but they were buried lying on their sides with their faces looking West to the land of the setting sun, just as later Egyptian mummies were.
